WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration – a
state of mind and body in which we communicate suggestions to our
subconscious mind. This part of our mind influences what we think,
how we feel, and the choices we make. It can actually control pain.
There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost
anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected
focus.
WHAT IS HYPNOBIRTHING?
When having your baby with HypnoBirthing, what you will experience
is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are
engrossed in a book or staring at a fire. You will be conversant and
in good spirits – totally relaxed, but fully in control. You will be
aware of your body’s contractions but will be able to determine the
extent to which you feel the uterine surge. You will experience your
birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, without fear and
tension that cause pain. Your body’s natural anesthesia (endorphins)
will replace the stress hormones that create pain.
When it is time for your baby to be born you will be fully awake and
involved.
ADVANTAGES TO HYPNOBIRTHING:
• Eliminates the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome before, during, and
after birthing
• Eliminates or greatly reduces the need for chemical painkillers
• Shortens the first stage of labor by several hours
• Eliminates fatigue during labor, leaving mother fresh, awake
and with energy for actual birthing
• Promotes special bonding of mother, baby and birthing companion
• Eliminates risk of hyperventilation from “shallow”
breathing methods
• More rapid postnatal recovery
• Returns birthing to the beautiful, peaceful experience nature
intended
• Creates a more integral role for the birthing companion
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
• Relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques to eliminate the fear
and tension that cause long labor and pain, replacing it with confidence,
calm and comfort
• Other techniques to produce a shorter, more comfortable labor
• The creation and control of the body’s own natural anesthesia
• The source of the myth that pain must accompany normal birthing
• Why women in other cultures have birthings almost entirely free
of discomfort
• How the mother’s body is designed to work in neuro-muscular
harmony with nature throughout labor
• Deep relaxation during and between uterine surges
• The importance of prenatal and peri-natal bonding
HOW HYPNOBIRTHING CAME TO BE:
In the mid 1950’s when Marie Mongan became pregnant with her first
child she decided that the pregnancy was not going to be “the usual
pregnancy”. At that time many women were completely drugged and had
no recollection of the experience. She did not accept the premise
that childbirth, which is a natural experience, needed to be
painful. After reading the book Childbirth Without Fear by Dr.
Grantly Dick-Read her instincts about a drug free, painless and safe
childbirth were confirmed. Marie was prepared for a natural
childbirth but was not taken seriously by people both within and
outside the medical profession. When it was time for her baby to be
born she managed the labor the way she had envisioned, peacefully
and naturally. When she told the nurse that the baby’s head had
crowned and that she was ready to birth the baby they pushed her
legs together and rushed her to the delivery room where they
strapped her to a table and forced an ether cone to her face. Once
she awoke from the anesthesia she was informed that she had
delivered a baby boy.
Two years later when Marie gave birth to their second child it
played out the same way. She labored peacefully and comfortably but
she was anesthetized for the birth of another baby boy. When
pregnant with their third child Marie’s wishes were finally taken
seriously. Her doctor agreed to allow her husband to be present (a
first for the hospital and the region) and acknowledged her requests
to not be strapped down and given ether or other drugs. With this
birth Marie had a fully natural birth, and again for her fourth
child. Her doctor commented on how impressed he was in her ability
to endure so much pain without anesthesia, however all that Marie
had felt were tightening sensations.
In the late 1980’s Marie became certified in hypnotherapy and
started to see a connection with hypnosis and her own births.
Shortly after becoming a hypno-therapist her daughter became
pregnant for the first time. Now Marie had a renewed interest in
birthing and based on her experiences and education a childbirth
education program was formed combining self-hypnosis and natural
childbirth. She called the program “HypnoBirthing.”
Marie’s daughter Maura and two other couples attended this new
method of childbirth education. Maura communicated her desires for
the gentle, natural and drug free birthing experience she wanted to
her midwife. She won her support but was still met with some
curiosity when she was observed resting peacefully during the 5
hours that she labored. On January 3, 1990, the first
“HypnoBirthing” baby, Kyle, was born. Marie had gone full circle.
Maura’s hospital staff was in awe of her birthing experience. They
had seen some gentle birthing experiences before but knew that this
was not a fluke, but instead a birth that had been thoughtfully
planned, prepared for, and achieved.
Each year thousands of couples are experiencing the joy of
HypnoBirthing. Like you, these couples want the best for themselves
and their baby and are taking the responsibility to see that it
happens. With confidence they are looking forward to a safe and
comfortable birthing experience.
